The tour
Sternfahrt Ariany/Sineu
Sineu sits right in the middle of the island, and Ariany a few kilometres further east on a hill. From here you have Mallorca in every direction: the south-east coast with Porto Colom, the vineyards of Binissalem at the foot of the Tramuntana, the bay of Pollença, the wild beach at Son Serra de Marina. Every morning you head off a different way, and every evening you come back to the same bed.
This is our first tour, the one we have been running since 2010, and still the one we recommend first. All our stages are easy and manageable even for riders without much practice. You set your own pace and your own breaks, because all our tours are individual and unguided. There is no group to keep up with.
What your week looks like
Sunday takes you to the coast at Porto Colom, Monday into the sleepy villages of the island’s centre, Tuesday by way of Montuïri with pa amb oli into the vineyards at Santa Maria. Wednesday is market day in Sineu, the oldest on the island, where livestock is still sold on a handshake. On Thursday we drive you out to Selva, and from there you roll back through Campanet and Port de Pollença across the Albufera. Friday finishes at the wild beach of Sa Canova in Son Serra de Marina, with lunch at the beach bar and black pigs in the pine woods.
Along the way: garage shops with vegetables straight from the field, cellers serving shoulder of lamb, a monastery at 510 metres for volunteers, and lanes where you will meet more sheep than cars.
Three houses, the same stages
You choose where you stay. The Ynaira Hotel in Ariany is a manor house from 1887 with pool and spa; Sa Barcella in Sineu is a large village house with patio and pool that you share with the other cyclists of the week; and Can Serrete is a small boutique hotel in the heart of Sineu. The stages are the same for all three, and they all start at the front door.

What to bring
Swimming things. We say so on four of the six days. Sun cream, a light windproof for the descents, and an appetite for stopping in villages that have nothing but a bar and a church. The rest, maps, GPX, arrows on the signs, bikes, helmet and the number we answer seven days a week, we have covered.

Your route day by day
Six stages, and each morning you decide how far you go today.
Saturday is for arriving. We will collect you from the airport if you like; otherwise you take a taxi or the train to Sineu and we tell you how. In the late afternoon we meet at the house, set the bikes up for you and lay out maps, GPX and the handlebar bag.
Over dinner or afterwards we go through the week together: where the market is, where the best pa amb oli is, and when to call us if you get a flat. After that your time is your own. The square and the cellers are waiting.

It all began on a Sunday. And on Sundays one rule applies: do not forget your swimming things! The bike takes you to Porto Colom. Once you have ridden through Petra, an adventurous little track leads you to Vilafranca, and anyone who fancies it can make the detour up to the Puig de Bonany.
In Vilafranca the small garage shops are waiting with fresh vegetables and fruit, with whatever the Mallorcan fields happen to be giving. After that you roll along fine cycling routes through Felanitx and Cas Concos to the south-east coast and the little fishing village of Porto Colom.
There are plenty of places to stop at that dreamy harbour. Ride on another two and a half kilometres and you reach the beach at S’Arenal. From there we bring you back to Ariany or Sineu in the van in the evening.

Today you head into the centre of the island. On the bike you discover the original Mallorca with its wide fields and plains. In Costitx, Lloret, Llubí and Búger time seems to have stopped; everything feels sleepy and familiar at once.
If you are after a sporting challenge, today is your day: the Puig de Santa Magdalena is calling, 510 metres at six per cent, with a monastery on top and a view over half the north of the island. Psst, you can also ride around it.
Back in Sineu or Petra you enjoy the rest of the day. Anyone with energy left heads for the pool. Anyone without does too.

Today you cross the island on easy-going country roads and old connecting lanes as far as the Tramuntana. Halfway, in Montuïri, a proper pa amb oli is waiting in a characterful village tavern to set you up again. It is in the price; all you have to bring is an appetite.
After that the way takes you to the foot of the Tramuntana, past almond and olive trees and through the vineyards of Binissalem. In Santa Maria you can add a wine tasting and try a small selection of Mallorcan wines.
And so that you can properly enjoy the wine, we collect you and the bikes in Santa Maria and bring you back to the finca or the village house. Fate has a way of turning: in our experience that becomes the most entertaining evening of the week.

On Wednesday, with an easy profile, a visit to the market at Sineu is on the cards, from nine o’clock onwards. As this is the finest and oldest market on the island, it is worth seeing whatever else you do. Hard to believe, but livestock is still sold here on a handshake, and the farmers from round about bring whatever is ripe.
On the way back our route takes you through the small village of Maria de la Salut to Petra, where you can stop for something. Our tip: the butcher in the village, who has supplied whole cycling groups with sobrassada, cheese and herb liqueur.
Fortified, you ride back through lovely countryside to the finca or the village house. A short day with full bags: that is what a Wednesday should be.

On Thursday we take you in our minibus to the handsome village of Selva at the foot of the Tramuntana. Pack your swimming things! This is where today’s riding begins, and it is the longest day of the week, but almost all of it flat or downhill.
On the way through Campanet to Port de Pollença, the edges of quiet lanes below the Tomir are lined with flowering meadows and almond, olive and fig trees. Worth seeing: Ses Fonts Ufanes and the caves at Campanet. In Port de Pollença there is a chance to cool off in the sea, a fine beach and a fine harbour, before the route follows the coast towards Alcúdia.
From the coast you cross Mallorca’s granary, past potato fields and the s’Albufera nature reserve to Muro. A mixture of reeds, fields, water mills and windmills keeps you company all the way to the finca. “And then it all came together”, our guests say about this day. We say: you have earned it.

Today, Friday, a colourful mix of long straights, private lanes and cycling routes takes you to the sleepy, hotel-free coastal village of Son Serra de Marina. Do not forget your swimming things! Here you can look forward to what is for us the finest wild beach on the island: Sa Canova, kilometres long, without a single sunbed, and depending on the wind with kitesurfers and wave riders.
Right on the beach is the El Sol Sunshine Bar, waiting for you with good food and an easy atmosphere. We live in this village, by the way, so if you see someone in cycling shoes at the bar, it could well be Stefan.
After that you ride back through the pine woods on rustic lanes to the finca or the village house, and tortoises, sheep and black pigs, the porc negre, may well cross your path. A happy ending straight out of a film, and with that the last riding day is over.

Saturday. One last breakfast, one last look at the rooftops, then we collect the bikes and take you to the airport if you like. If you fancy adding a few days by the sea, tell us beforehand: we have a house in Can Picafort in mind.

What guests ask us beforehand
You only ride alone if you want to. Our tours are unguided: you set your own pace and your own breaks, and there is no group to keep up with. In our experience a small group forms on the first evening and heads off together. You do not have to find anything: you get maps, GPX files for your phone or GPS and our arrows on the road signs. And if something does come up, we are on the phone.
If you ride 40 kilometres along a flat route at home on a weekend, you are fit enough. The stages are 40 to 70 kilometres, easy to moderate, with plenty of stops in places where stopping is a pleasure. There are no big climbs, and the ones that get in the way can be ridden around. On an e-bike it is more relaxed still.
Then you take it off. On a sternfahrt you sleep in the same house every night, so the day is simply free: pool, market, train to Palma. On the PetitHotel Tour we will take you on to the next house with the luggage if you like. And if your legs give up out on the road, our biketaxi comes for you: your location on WhatsApp is enough.
On the sternfahrten you unpack once and leave your case in the room all week. On the PetitHotel Tour we drive your luggage from house to house, and it is in the room before you get off the bike. For the day you get a pannier and a handlebar bag for your maps.
Yes, outside built-up areas a helmet is compulsory in Spain, and inside them it is recommended. We give you a loaner helmet free of charge, though your own usually fits better. Safety first.
